ChooseWell

ChooseWell: one-page brief

A free-to-try app that lets anyone cut through marketing and see the real picture behind a purchase, in the time it takes to scan a barcode. Formerly Shopper Assist.

The problem

Standing in a store aisle, most people can only compare two things: the price tag, and maybe a calorie count. Everything else, who owns the brand, whether it has been recalled, how much the company spends trying to influence government policy, stays hidden behind the marketing on the front of the package.

What it does

Scan a product's barcode, photograph its packaging, or enter a VIN for a car, and see:

  • Political involvement: PAC contributions, lobbying, and Super PAC and state giving connected to the company, from public FEC and state filings.
  • Safety: recall notices (FDA, USDA, CPSC, NHTSA) and ingredients banned or restricted elsewhere.
  • Nutrition: compared against thresholds the user sets, not a generic standard.
  • Reviews: from other users, no account required.

An optional Candidates tab lets users look up any federal, state or local candidate's own funding before they vote: the same public-record approach, the same neutral presentation.

Why it matters

It puts control back with the person making the decision. Control over health, because a safety concern shows up before checkout, not after. Control over money, because a purchase becomes deliberate instead of default. Control over civic impact, because anyone can see who is funding the people asking for their vote, using the same public record everyone else can access.

Strictly nonpartisan

ChooseWell does not endorse any product, company, party or candidate. Every data point is public record, sourced and linked, so the person using it draws their own conclusions. The complete list of sources, with a link to each, is at shopper-assist-api.fly.dev/sources.

Cost and availability

Free 7-day trial, then a paid subscription (monthly or annual). No account required. Live on the App Store and Google Play.
